LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - An engineering research program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is working with a one-of-a-kind tool in the United States. Professors at the center where it’s housed said the laser can be used for all kinds of things, from aerospace materials to materials you can find in your phone.

Lasers on their own are pretty impressive, and this isn’t your average beam. The laser leaps over obstacles of widespread use in other industries, improving scalability or the ability to be produced in a range of capabilities. In short, this new laser at UNL’s Center for Electro-Optics and Functionalized Surfaces is a game changer.

“We can use the laser to scan a surface and we create some texture on the surface that gives the surface certain properties without using a traditional paint or coating,” said Craig Zuhlke, Assoc. Prof. of Electrical and Computer Engineering
